It will be Free Software (Free as in Freedom) but development has just begun. Please enjoy these free music, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC articles and links.
Welcome to my pond! I'm Rippit the Ogg Frog. I wanted to rip my collection of two hundred compact discs to Ogg Vorbis to take with me on a trip to a lake out west, but I was frustrated with every CD ripper and encoder I tried. But Rippit doesn't give up that easy! I'm still going to rip my CD collection, but first I'm going to write a CD ripper that makes it easy and quick to rip and encode my whole music collection.
I'm also going to make it easy to backup my CDs so I can restore them faithfully if my dog ever chews on any more of my favorite albums.
It's what they call "scratching an itch".
And the best part is, when I get it working, I'm going to share it with you, source code and everything, under the terms of the GNU General Public License, as published by the Free Software Foundation.
That's because Rippit believes software should be as Free as the Wind. I'll be posting progress as my development work on Ogg Frog gets underway. Later!

iRATE radio downloads MP3s from the websites of artists who provide them. It uses a system called collaborative filtering to learn your taste in music, then downloads tracks recommended by others who share your tastes.
VLC Media PlayerVLC can play and stream many audio and video formats. It's stream output options allows you to save Internet radio to your hard drive in a format you can play back and enjoy later. It's complicated and hard to figure out though, so I'll write a HOWTO this weekend that will guide you through it step by step.
Links to Tens of Thousands of Legal Music DownloadsMy buddy Mike Crawford's article has links to hundreds of legal music download sites as well as the homepages of many artists who offer downloads of their music.
Rippit the Ogg Frog believes there's enough room in the pond for all the little frogs to swim. Ducks too, if they want.
I'll be researching which encoders and players are truly Free and not just freeware. For now, you can find Ogg Vorbis encoders and players at Vorbis.com
The Free Lossless Audio Codec allows you to save rips that are the same quality as your original CD but of much smaller size than WAVs
Ogg Vorbis is packaged in the Ogg Container Format. FLAC can be too, in which case it is called Ogg FLAC, but it usually isn't.
